Not usually after a Championship season is a team likely to lose their VP of Ticket Sales, their Head Coach, and their GM. But, it looks like the Crew will be going for the trifecta after this little piece.
If you haven't heard, McCullers is probably headed to FC Dallas. Huh? FC Dallas? I would love the rationale on why anyone would pick a GM job with a franchise like FC Dallas over a franchise like the Crew? Yes, even though the Crew are still not completely successful, although we will get there, across the board yet. FC Dallas is struggling alot more. We have a way better supporters group, a way better team, way better momentum, way better fans overall, better attendance in a smaller city, and oh yeah a little thing called the Anschutz trophy. It is likely, although decreasing with this mass exodus, that the Crew will be on the up and up next year. Maybe it isn't McCullers doing though.
In a way, I think since McCullers is HSG's man, that HSG wants him to copy the success in FC Dallas and they could care somewhat less about the continued success of the Crew(or maybe they think that a real life chimp could run the Crew and it could be a success, who knows). But, I mean HSG are not attempting to divest FC Dallas, it's almost like the wrong team won the cup for them. Anyways, this is why it's not worth snuggling up to close with the FO or even coaches for that matter, it's strictly business.
Even Sigi, god bless him, but at least Warzycha and Lapper bleed black and gold and want to be here. If it's family that's fine or HSG's horrible negotations that's fine as well. But, Sigi since winning the cup doesn't seem to want too much of anything to do with Columbus(I don't blame him too much for HSG's reluctancy). But, in a way, it seems that he was using the Crew as a platform for another job. And, hell in a way I'm fine with that if it gives us a trophy. It's not different then Chad Marshall going to Germany(although Seattle isn't Germany).
Also, Sigi for all I care can wear the scarf for all eternity and is a legend. He will have a picture by the fireplace in ever Crew fan's house from now on. Won us our first cup for chrissakes and I feel like taking a shower for saying any of this. But, I would be lying if I wasn't a little disappointed with his lack of interest to at least try to get back to the Crew. I mean we love the guy, would love a little love back and a few more trophies. Anyways, I hope it's about being closer to his family then about the paycheck, because I'm sure they could work it out if he wanted to be here.
To conclude what has turned into an offseason drama about to be as scintallating as the MLS Cup run, I find it a little concerning that the head coach and the front office are running away from a Championship caliber and dynasty caliber team. Does that happen to the Patriots? Or any other dynasty ever? With Sigi, McCullers, etc. around for a long time this franchise could of been a power. That's a shame. What's more a shame, wrong word disappointment as both are legendary in a way for giving us this team this year, is how easily they are willing to give up on it. And, what may even be more disappointing is the nonchalance of HSG on Sigi and them now divesting McCullers onto FC Dallas.
Who knows what to make of this mess? But, hey, at least we have Schelotto. :-)

Hunt Sports Group President John Wagner offered this prepared statement: "There is absolutely no truth to the speculation/rumors regarding Mark McCullers and Michael Hitchcock. Mark is the president and general manager of the Crew, and Michael is the general manager of FC Dallas, which includes overseeing the soccer-side of the club."
