Sirk's Article: MLS Cup Edition

Good stuff here.

Bravo to Sirk all year. I would put him up as one of the best writers following any team no matter the sport.

Quoteables:
The first was hearing a preseason tale about the Crew's trip to England. Manchester United was hosting a Champions League quarterfinal, and some members of the Crew wanted to go to the game. Tickets were ridiculously expensive and well out of the price range of some of the team's support staff. The plan was that some guys would go to the game, while others would seek out a pub near Old Trafford. However, Guillermo Barros Schelotto asked some of the staffers if they wanted to go. They said yes, but they could not afford tickets. "No problem," said Guille. With one Schelotto phone call, the staffers were soon watching the game from Man U. star Carlos Tevez's luxury box.

When building a locker room, the coach obviously needs his star players to get it. For example, Guillermo Barros Schelotto came in as an Argentine legend, but quickly adapted to his new league, club, and teammates. "Guillermo's a different type of guy and he trains a little different," said Schmid. "I remember the week after he got here, Robert Warzycha looked at me and said, 'Are you sure?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'm sure.' It's all about character. A good friend of mine knew Guillermo and vouched for his character. Somebody I knew also knew Guillermo and his family, so he vouched for my character, and it sort of became a marriage that way. One person was saying, 'Guillermo, this is a guy you will love playing for,' and another person was saying, 'Sigi, trust me, this is a guy you will enjoy having play for you.' It's been everything we hoped for. He's a great personality."
