5/20/09: Seattle Fans Flood The Polls Although Some Of Their Players Don't Deserve It

Drew Carey and Sounders fans are one or two away from having a straight Seattle FC player ballot.

From the Sounders FC Blog:
As currently constituted, the First XI would consist of eight Sounders FC players. The only exceptions in the opening week of voting are veteran Columbus Crew fullback Frankie Hejduk, who holds a slim lead on Seattle's James Riley, Dwayne De Rosario, a Toronto FC midfielder, and Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan.

My thoughts: The point of voting for an all star is to vote for the best performing team through the games that have been played, not a straight ticket. On my ballot I only voted for Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Chad Marshall. For Seattle I only voted for Casey Keller because he is the only one having an all star caliber year, so far. I didn't vote for Frankie Hejduk because he hasn't played. I didn't vote for Montero or Evans from Seattle because there are strikers like Wolff and McBride and midfielders like Schelotto, Nagamura, Blanco, Davis, and Pappa who are having way better years.

I just hate the amatuer notion of the new teams to vote all their players, even the ones who have not had anywhere close to an all star year so far. Real Salt Lake did the same a couple years back. Thank god though that the fans only make up a 1/3rd of the voting.

Be objective fans and vote for the best players so far this year. The reason why the fan voting only takes up 1/3rd is because of this ballot stuffing.

It's not just new teams, and it's not just MLS. This happens all over sports, and it's part of the deal. While I don't like it, I understand it. Hate to be blunt, bu you should probably just suck it up and deal.

Lol, yeah I'm just complaining. I'll suck it up and deal with it because well what else can you do, lol.

I think they have a great team, especially for being a first year team. But, come on.. Casey Keller is the only one that is a legitimate all star so far, at least numbers wise.

And, man, how is Frankie Hejduk in there? I guess a name goes a long way. But, the guy has only played 3 games this year.

The whole fan voting seems like just a waste of time.

You mean "Kasey Keller". :)

I suspect a huge % of fans of any sport will vote across their favorite team in most all-star votes.

It just so happens that Sounders FC (whether you consider it a fad, or something unprecedented) has a disporportionately large fan base, and those fans are voting across for their club.

You probably haven't watched a Sounders game then. Osvaldo Alonso NEEDS to be in the all star game. He is having one hell of a year. Anyone who follows MLS can tell you that. LeToux/Zakuani should be on the team as a reserve and you are right Keller deserves to be on the team as well. Other than them, as a Sounders fan, I voted for other players besides just Sounders. Guys like Jaqua and Evans should not be on the all star squad and I will not hesitate to admit it either.

Here's the deal. Fan voting isn't responsible for picking the final squad outright. In theory, fans from every club are going to stuff their respective ballots, so in the end, the fan voting portion should more or less be equal across all clubs (well, clubs that have players nominated at least). If the fans of one club aren't stuffing as much, perhaps they're not as hard core of fans and don't really care if their player gets voted in -- in which case, maybe that player shouldn't be voted in, because after all, that's sort of the point of fan voting, right?

I also agree that there are just some seriously good players on the Sounders squad that should be voted in. Per the previous comment, Alonso is a great midfielder, and Keller is a great goalkeeper (although arguably, there are a couple others that are voteworthy as well). Although I'm a Sounders fan, I found myself trying to be "fair" by voting for the best players on the list. It just so happens that a lot of them are on the Sounders.

Fair enough comments above.

I agree there might be an argument for Osvaldo.

But, come on, Ljuenberg(I bet he makes it just because he is Ljuenberg) or Hurtado or Evans or Jaqua..

It makes sense though as I suspect fans from each club do a little of this and Seattle has at least 8,000, maybe now 12,000 more then the next highest a game.

I'm sure I have been a little one sided, like last year where I thought most Crew players were the best the league had to offer. Except this year, I think only Guillermo is an all star.
